To promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of National Parks by the public.
The Authority also has a duty (under the Environment Act 1995) to foster the socio-economic well-being of local communities without incurring significant expenditure in doing so.
As one of the Constituent Authorities of the Peak District National Park, Staffordshire County Council are currently entitled, by the Environment Act 1995, to appoint one representative to the Peak District National Park Authority.

The Secretary of State for the Environment also appoints 8 national representatives and 6 Parish representatives, giving a total of 30 Members of the Authority.
