Meigh Road Footpath Repairs

urgently carry our repairs and resurfacing works to the footpaths along Meigh Road and the surrounding streets.

Highways have recently confirmed that the planned repair/resurfacing works to the Meigh Road footpaths have once again been postponed in the works program. These footpaths are exceedingly dangerous and are continuing to deteriorate quickly. Representatives of Highways have visited the site and confirmed the terrible state of these footpaths and works were expected to commence this financial year (after other previous delays) but now appear to have been moved again to next year with no guarantee this delay won't keep re-occurring. These footpaths are now very dangerous and require urgent and extensive works to bring them anywhere near an acceptable standard.

Council response

I refer to the petition regarding the request for the Meigh Road footway maintenance.

The Meigh Road footways received a footway preventative treatment (micro asphalt) in January 2022. At this time the condition was found to not present any health and safety issues.

In order to keep the public highway safe, urgent and high priority defects around the county are resolved in a matter of days as we will always prioritise our resources to firstly tackle the problems on the network which pose the greatest risk.

However, this does unfortunately mean that lower priority issues are not always dealt with as quickly as we would prefer and I am sorry if this has not been properly communicated to you earlier.

All road surfaces deteriorate due to use and weathering and severe weather conditions can accelerate the deterioration of roads. Reactive maintenance work, which is aimed at keeping the roads safe, is identified by a comprehensive system of highway inspections that categorise each defect based on the risk it presents to the travelling public.

We will arrange for a visit to Meigh Road by the Community Highway Engagement Officer and follow up conversations as required with the Operations Team and the Pavement Engineer’
